NPH Partnership
In the fall of 2017, St. Charles School began building a partnership with Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos (NPH) whose name means Our Little Brothers and Sisters. Since 1954 this group has provided a home for thousands of orphans and abandoned children in 9 Latin American countries.
Each of our grades (K-8) sponsors one child from the Honduras Ranch. Our preschool does not have designated sponsored children but we encourage them to donate and participate in the program. These children have been through a difficult situation leading up to their placement at NPH. The NPH model has students placed in families with a “Tio” or “Tia” who is like a foster parent to them. The children receive faith formation, education, medical attention, food and clothing. Their lives are far from glamorous, but the way they live and thrive is truly inspiring as witnessed by our principal when he visited the Ranch in 2017.
In the fall of 2017, we started designating one day each month to celebrate this partnership by offering prayers and a donation of $1 or more to support the child each grade level is sponsoring. We will also celebrate this day by wearing St. Charles spirit wear to school. We ask that the donation come from your child, whether they have saved or earned the donation. We want this day and this project to be meaningful for our students and we want them to take ownership in making a difference for their sponsored child.
In addition, our students will receive one picture and letter per year from their sponsored child. In return, each grade will also write one letter and send one picture (whole class) to their sponsored child. The translation and writing of these letters will take place in Spanish class with the guidance of our Spanish specialist.
The monthly NPH Sponsorship Celebration Days can be found on our school’s online calendar. The final day in June of each year will be a summer donation day, and we will ask students to bring in $3 or more to cover the months of June, July and August.
This project is designed to be mutually beneficial for NPH and St. Charles. The students of NPH receive our much-needed financial support. The students of St. Charles will learn more about poverty in the world and our duty as Disciples of Christ to help provide for those who are less fortunate. Both groups will receive and offer prayers during this project; they will be in our prayers, and we will be in their prayers.
